Shaking The Hell Outta That Etch-A-Sketch (Lady Edition)
For me, the real story of the first presidential debate wasn’t Obama’s weak performance, but rather the ‘October Surprise’ that the GOP is now fielding a completely new candidate! This new “moderate” Mitt has something for everyone — except Big Bird, of course.
Continuing his amazing pandering pivot to the center, Romney yesterday told the editorial board of the Des Moines Register:
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”
Whew! It’s okay ladies, we can breathe easy and vote for Mitt now we know he’s not going to mess with our reproductive rights!
The Romney campaign walked back the remark within two hours of the Register posting its story. Spokeswoman Andrea Saul told National Review Online’s Katrina Trinko that Romney “would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.” (HuffPost)
Confused? Who do you believe — Mitt Romney or Mitt Romney two hours later? Let’s go to the tape: Not long ago, Romney posted his official “Pro-Life Pledge” at the National Review Online. A few tidbits:
And as president, I will support efforts to prohibit federal funding for any organization like Planned Parenthood, which primarily performs abortions or offers abortion-related services.
I will advocate for and support a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion.
I will reinstate the Mexico City Policy to ensure that nongovernmental organizations that receive funding from America refrain from performing or promoting abortion services, as a method of family planning, in other countries. This includes ending American funding for any United Nations or other foreign assistance program that promotes or performs abortions on women around the world.
Now maybe I’m just some silly woman, but there seem to be serious inconsistencies here. Either Mitt’s lying to us now or he was lying to us then. But here’s one clear fact: the only thing Mitt Romney has been consistent about is his willingness to say anything he thinks he needs to say.
