‘Slutty’ Lady Gaga Tokes Up
Sometimes I run across odd news bits…
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Borough President James Molinaro used the kickoff of an anti-substance abuse initiative to light into pop superstar Lady Gaga, calling her a “slut” as he pointed to a picture of her firing up a marijuana spliff at a concert in Amsterdam last week. (SI Live)
Look, I don’t begrudge Molinaro his concern over substance abuse. The post also reports that he lost his own son to addiction in 2006. Still, Lady Gaga smoking pot in Amsterdam is unlikely to lead to anyone’s death by that or any other drug. (Now if she were boozing it up, maybe.)
But the bigger point here is that in an attempt to draw attention to what could have been a reasonable discussion of the glamorization of drugs in popular culture and the media (an admittedly old canard), Molinaro thought he’d grab some extra attention by flamboyantly smearing a pop star as a “slut”; and in doing so, he detracted from and smeared his own message. [We call this #FAIL]
To make matters worse, Molinaro seems unsure about just who Lady Gaga is. He says his 12 and 14 year old daughters “they love this woman. Why? Why?” But then he says:
“To me, she’s not an actress, she’s a slut … in the pure meaning of the word.” (emphasis mine)
Or maybe I should give him points for accuracy when he says she’s not an actress? At any rate, try as I might, I can’t seem to find a definition anywhere to define ‘slut’ to fit this usage.

Okay. So what the heck is Molinaro talking about? Does he just find her untidy? I don’t get it. Anybody?
Here’s what The Republican Dictionary had to say:
slut (slŭt) n. 1. a: any unmarried (esp. liberal) woman who debases herself by having sex. b: any woman using birth control. c: by extension, any unmarried woman.
2. any woman who is not married to a Republican.
3. your mistress.
Usage note: Any woman, from birth on, is a potential slut. Care must be taken to rigidly control her education and body to make sex dangerous, revolting and, ideally impossible (except for having large numbers of conservative babies). This is achieved by homeschooling throughout childhood and legislation in adulthood.
Conservapedia does not have an entry for slut, but lists it as an “an anti-Christian and anti-American” secular variant of “harlot”.
I guess I still don’t see how that relates to pot smoking. But I’m sure it’s all inter-related somehow.

I doesn’t relate to pot smoking per se, but it is meant to lampoon the notion that the only word in the Republican/Conservative/Wingnut vocabulary for “woman” appears to be “slut”. I’m sorry if it was too subtle for you, but, as the old proverb says, “She who laughs last didn’t get the joke”.
